Every other test on the list gives every candidate a number. These are aimed at a band, so choosing which one to enter is most of the preparation.

Three exams at three levels, and you enter one of them

These are not stages of a course. Each paper assumes the level it is named for, so the rung you stand on is a decision made before you book.

  1. 03C2 ProficiencyRarely needed, and asks for range rather than correctnessfor a specific reason only
  2. 02C1 AdvancedTexts and tasks assume C1. Entering from a solid B2 is the common mistake.the one most people enter
  3. 01B2 FirstWritten for a candidate already at B2. A strong result reports above it.the one most people should enter

The two tags on the middle rungs are the whole of this page. What the ladder cannot show is that a strong pass on a lower rung is reported at the level above, so the safe choice is also frequently the better one.

These exams are aimed at a level rather than spread across a range, which means you choose which one to sit and you can fail it. Every other common English test gives every candidate a score somewhere on a scale; here, entering the wrong exam produces a result that says you did not reach the level, which is a different kind of outcome to plan around.

So the main decision is not how to prepare. It is which of them to enter, and getting that right is worth more than several months of study.

Eight facts about the family

  • B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency, the three adult exams, each tied to one level of the common European framework.
  • the certificate does not expire, which is the strongest argument for choosing this family over a score based test.
  • it is a pass or fail at a level rather than a number, so you enter at the level you are aiming at.
  • you can pass at the level above or below. A strong candidate at B2 First can be awarded a C1 certificate, and a weak one can be awarded B1.
  • it tests a level, not a score, which means it is a poor fit if an institution has asked for a specific number.
  • five parts in the reading and use of English, including word formation and key word transformation, which test grammar directly in a way the other exams do not.
  • the speaking is in pairs, with another candidate, which is unique among these four and rewards conversational skills over monologue.
  • preparation takes months, not weeks, because the exam targets a whole level rather than a set of task types.

Three levels, and the one above is not a stretch goal

B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency sit at three points on the scale, and each is written for candidates already at that level. That is the property that catches people: an exam written for C1 is not a harder version of the B2 paper with the same content, it is a paper whose texts, tasks and expected responses assume C1.

A B2 candidate entering the C1 exam does not get a lower mark on the same scale. They get a paper they cannot fully engage with, and the experience of sitting it is genuinely different from sitting the right one.

Results are reported on a single scale that runs across all three, so a strong performance in one exam can be reported at the band above it. That is the safety net and it works in the direction people do not expect: it rewards over-preparing for the exam below rather than under-preparing for the one above.

What the format asks that the others do not

These papers include a Use of English element that tests grammar and vocabulary directly, in gapped sentences and word-formation tasks. Nothing in the other common tests does that, so a candidate arriving from a band-scored exam meets question types they have never seen.

Word formation in particular rewards exactly the thing described elsewhere in this atlas as a vocabulary economy: given decide, produce the noun, the adjective and the negative form, spelled correctly. It is a family test, and it is the one part of these exams that can be prepared by list.

The Speaking test is taken in pairs, with two candidates and two examiners, and part of it requires you to interact with the other candidate. That is unusual and it is a real variable: you are not marked on your partner, and a partner who says very little or who talks over you changes what you have to do.

Where it stops: entering the one that looks better

The stall is choosing by what the certificate is worth rather than by where you are. C1 Advanced reads better on an application than B2 First, so a candidate at a solid B2 enters the C1 exam with six months of preparation and a plan to close the gap.

The gap does not close in six months, because the distance between those two bands is one of the larger steps on the scale. What comes back is a result the candidate cannot use, and a year has gone. The same person entering B2 First would have passed comfortably, possibly with a result reported at C1 on the scale, and would have had the certificate in hand.

Nothing warns you, because entry is open. There is no gate, no placement requirement, and nobody at the centre will suggest you have chosen the wrong paper.

The board's own free placement

Cambridge publishes a free online test that takes about twenty-five minutes and returns a recommendation of which of its exams to enter. It is short and it does not pretend to be a full assessment; what it does is answer precisely the question this page says matters most, using the board's own alignment.

It replaced asking a teacher which exam to enter, which is an opinion formed from your classroom performance, and classroom performance is a poor predictor of an exam that is taken in silence with strangers.

Its limitation is scope: it is a reading and use-of-English instrument, so it says nothing about your speaking, and speaking is a full component of the exam it is recommending. Take the recommendation, then record two minutes of yourself and check it against the level's descriptors before booking.

What it looks like when it goes wrong

The recognisable failure is a result one band below the exam entered, which is a real outcome and is much less useful than a pass in the exam below.

The second is a Use of English section that goes badly for a candidate whose English is fine. Those tasks are testing precision in isolated sentences, which is not what a fluent speaker practises, and they can be prepared in a few weeks by somebody who knows they exist and are a disaster for somebody who does not.

The word-formation tasks run on one root, and the nouns, verbs and adjectives around it, and the level judgement that decides which paper to enter is placing yourself honestly without paying for an exam.

The other consideration is time rather than level. These qualifications do not expire, which changes the arithmetic entirely if the reason for sitting one is a job application several years out rather than a deadline next spring: what each test scores, and how to prepare for yours.
